How can you tell when to replace tires? I have Goodrich rugged terrain SUV tires with 20,000 miles on them.

Tires have a 6 year warrenty but only about 1/4 inch of tread remaining. they are around 3 years old

Take a penny and place it in the tread, if you can see lincolns head, your tires need to be replaced. Have you had them rotated?

The legal limit is 2/32 of an inch. The penny thing is okay, but I think everyone should own a tread depth gauge. They are cheap and easy to use, but sometimes hard to find. Ask around at some auto part stores, they should be able to get you one.

The Lincoln head penny is what folks use to check for being street legal. But as for replacing the tires, if you're slipping and sliding, it's time, regardless of tread depth. The tires will also have wear indicators which are slightly raised above the deepest tread depth. When the wear indicators are level with the rest of the tread, it's time to replace the tires.

1/4 inch is a lot of tread! Why do you want to replace them? If they are slipping or too rough for road travel, then change them as you desire, but they are perfectly good tires if they have that much tread left.
