How do I check the computer to find out why a check engine light is on?

I changed the valve cover gasket, air filter, oil and oil filter and the plugs and wires, but the check engine light came on after the gasket and air filter were replaced. I tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery, but no luck in getting the light to stay off. It only comes on after driving the car for approx. 10 minutes.

You said you changed the spark plug wires? Some vehicles have learning computers that will adjust engine management operations to keep system operating within known parameters, when you changed the wires the computer may be detecting a change in its adjusted parameter and this shows as a check engine light.

You don't give the year and make, but if it's newer than about 1997, then it's OBD-2 and you can get it read at many auto parts chains. You might also want to look at buying an inexpensive reader yourself, can get them about 40 bucks now adays. There is a different process and reader for older cars, and some where you count blinking lights.

"but the check engine light came on after the gasket and air filter were replaced"

First thing no matter what kind of vehicle is to go back and check your work. Make sure no connections (wires or hoses) were left unplugged or broken. The filter box usually has a couple of sensors in it as well and those can be replaced if they're bad. As the others noted, you'll need a code reader of some sort to find out what the CEL is trying to tell you. AutoZone *usually* will read the code for free, worth a try at least.
