How do you install the driver's side turn signal assembly on a VW Passat 2000?

Something had hit my driver's side turn signal and knocked it off it's "socket" while I was driving on the fwy. I lost the assembly but the wires remain intact. I bought a new one and am trying to figure out where the spring attaches to the car. I tried attaching it this notch but it would just pop off. Where does the spring latch attach to? Please provide pictures and point to where it goes. I'm somewhat bewildered. Thanks!
