Hyundai warranty states 5yr/60000mi if over 5 yr and less than 60k is warranty still in effect?

I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra and want to know if the car is older than 5 years and has less than 60000 miles is the warranty still in effect? I need to replace the timing belt and have 54000 miles on it, however it is 6 years old. Do I need to replace it and if it breaks before I get it in the shop if it ruins the engine will it be under the 10 year powertrain warranty? Thanks.

Nope. Any warranty states it is whatever comes first, the 5 year anniversary or 60k miles in this case. So you crossed the time threshold first and the car is out of warranty. With only 54k miles, I wouldn't worry about the timing belt breaking. But, if by chance it did AND you were still under warranty (which you aren't), it wouldn't be covered under the warranty because changing the belt is scheduled maintenance and if you didn't perform scheduled maintenance and something goes wrong, it is your fault, so no warranty coverage.

5 years or 60,000 miles. Whichever comes first.

So, no. The timing belt replacement wouldn't fall under warranty anyhow. That's normal wear and tear.

Good luck!

Sorry, friend. 5yr/60000mi means whichever comes first. I personally have the same warranty loss problem. Also, I am an investigator for a State Insurance Department. I deal with this question 3X a week.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to make an appt. to get the timing belt put on next week. I am also going to have the 60000 mile checkup done at the same time. With 54000 and over 5 years on the car I guess I should have it done now. Has anyone had it done by Christian Brother Auto Repair places? Thanks.
