I have a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria. The Check Engine light comes on and off on the dashboard. Can the car break down?

What does this light mean? Can the car break down on the road if not taken care of by the Ford Dealer?

The CEL is just a warning that something big or small is not working properly. If the car still runs well, the chances are it's a small problem. Don't panic. It could be that your gas cap is not on tightly enough. That will set off the light. You don't need to go to the dealer. Find a good independent mechanic on the Car Tak website at

Enter your zipcode and you will see several highly recommended mechanics based on consumer reviews. Call 2-3 and ask what they charge for a simple diagnostic test. Go and see what the diagnostic says. Don't spend a lot of $$$ fixing things that are not proven to be broken! Good Luck!
