I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The check engine light came on, and the battery gauge went to low.

The check engine light came on, and the battery gauge went to low. What can cause this problem? I just bought a new battery 11 days ago.

The alternator has probably failed. You can do it yourself or pay the big bucks and have a shop diagnose the check engine light, as it could always be something else. Odds are since you have a gauge reading low that the alternator has failed. If you do it then also replace the fan belt(s).

Go to any major auto parts store and they will test your alternator for free. You should also make sure that the battery cables are on tightly. Many times when you change the battery, the cables are not reattached tightly or the negative ground cable gets loosened at the ground point. Good luck!
