I am looking for a 2 door sport hatchback that's more practical (better gas mileage) than Mitsubishi Eclipse.

I am looking to purchase a good looking 2 door hatchback that gives at least 25 miles per gallon of gas. I love the look of the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Who are their competitors?

My top pick would be the Volkswagen Rabbit. The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit is a great performer with plenty of standard features and a high index of class and comfort. The Honda Fit gets better gas mileage but is pretty ugly in my estimation. Reviewers find the 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit a great combination of practical and spirited in both design and performance, and say the car's top attributes include its agile performance, individual styling and high-class cabin. The Rabbit offers standard electronic stability control, whereas the Fit does not. The Rabbit was selected as one ofKelly Blue Books' Top 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000, thanks to their safety features, comfort, technology and fun-to-drive index. The 2009 VW Rabbit does very well in crash tests, in fact it receives IIHS' "Top Safety Pick" distinction for its performance in front, side and rear crash tests. The quality of the interior and construction really stands out in this group.

You didn't mention the year of the Eclipse or the year for its replacement. IMO, it would be very hard for you to improve your fuel economy sufficiently to offset the incidental costs of replacement. The 4 cyl Eclipse is rated 20/28/23 while the v-6 is 18/27/21 for a MY 2005. If you have to pay sales tax in your state, plus the new registration costs, it could take many years for payback to break even with a more fuel efficient car.

If you're looking used, take a look at a Celica and then do the math to see how many years it would take for the savings at the pump to break even. If you save $200 a year on gas with a new ride, but have to pay $1000 sales/excise tax on a replacement car, is it worth the loss you'll take on your old car? My guess is that when you do the math, the fuel savings alone will not be great enough to change cars. I think you might save more on insurance than gas!
