I have a 2002 Mercury Sable GS that is misfiring on startup. I have the code and what it means, what next?

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable GS. My check engine light has been on for quite some time, and every time I get it hooked up to the machine I get the DTC Code P0316. The code means engine misfire detected on start up (first 1000 revolutions). What does this mean and how can I fix it?
