Often one may acquire a "o" ring or "washer" in the oil filter pack.. Most if not in all cases.. the washer maybe discard.. but only if the oil filter doesn't seat properly.. Lets make sure you bought the correct filer.. If the filter is an incorrect length.. then you may have a bad "seat" to engine placement.

Also some times one may need to "pre-greese" the rubber seal around the outside of the filer.. this create a better seal on filter instead of just tightening the filter to the engine.

True there has been once or twice I to have encountered a bad fit on an oil filter.. but a simple few more turns closed the gap. One thing they make a tool to use while installing and removing the filter.. without it you may end up with an incorrect seal placement.

I like the computer gadget at walmart which allows one to enter the make and model of the vehicle. then one may have a few choices when selecting the right filter for your GMC.

Check to make sure you don't have two oil filter gaskets (rings) installed. That can cause a leak. You should see the bare metal on the engine or oil pan before you install the new gasket. And you should put a little oil on the gasket when you put the filter on.

Check your owner's manual but most oil filters should be installed hand tight only - no tools. Usually that means you screw the filter on until it mates with the engine block and then turn it an additional 1/2 to 3/4ths of a turn.
