I am considering an Infiniti G35 coupe 6MT. OEM rims are 19". Can I downsize to 17" or 18" rims from a G35 sedan?

For G35 6MT coupes from 2005-2007, 19" forged wheels are standard. I like the car, and I want a manual transmission, but I drive approximately 25000 miles per year (mostly highway). I would like to downsize the rims from 19" to 17" or 18" to improve the ride, reduce the noise and reduce the cost of replacing tires.

I prefer OEM rims to aftermarket rims, so I would like to know if the sedan rims will fit the 6MT coupe without unusual tire wear or problems with wheel alignment.

The sedan rims will fit fine. I would go to 17 inch rims for the smoothest highway ride. Make sure the overall diameter of the new wheel and tire configuration equal the original or your speedometer will register an incorrect speed. Some cars not only ride smoother but actually handle just as well with the smaller wheel/higher aspect ratio you are considering. For sure, it will be MUCH cheaper than buying 19 inch tires.

Yes 17 inch rims on a 6mt coupe would make a fine daily driver. The suspension is still pretty stiff but you could upgrade the struts to aftermarket which would give you a better ride (Nismo or Koni, for example). The 6mt does have larger brakes, I believe 12.8 inch on the front, so you need to make sure the smaller rims will clear the large brakes. If you go with 17" stock G35 rims, readily available on ebay for a low price, you should be fine. Those are nice looking wheels. The stock forged 19" rims are really nice but very expensive to replace if stolen or damaged. If you live in a warm climate, stick with "summer" tread tires with a conservative tread pattern (like a good set of Michelins or something) because you will get a better grip on the road wet or dry. All seasons on this car will diminish the sharp steering response and neutral handling characteristics, much more important than the rim diameter. If you live in a cold climate get another set of those stock 17's and mount a good set of snow tires (check out tirerack.com). Also going with the stock 17" tire size should make sense. Again, talking to a rep at tirerack would answer those questions clearly because they have all the ratio specs. 6mt coupes are a good bargain right now if you shop around. The 05-07's have had some engine problems but otherwise should have good reliability. Check to see whether the engine has been replaced due to oil consumption. For daily driving the 03-04 might actually be a better choice because for 05-07 they changed the character of the engine so it has a little less low end torque and more high end horsepower. For daily driving the older style would make a little more sense. But then you don't get the (minor) upgrades to the trim and materials of the later models, so it's kinda a toss up. Good luck!
