I found metal shavings in my oil, and it was giving up white smoke from muffler. New motor or rebuild?

My 2002 1.8 turbo jetta was making a really weird scrachy noise, and then white smoke started to come out of muffler. I didnt use it anymore and when chking the oil it has mini metal shavings. Can i have the motor re-build or will it have to be re-placed?

Shavings could be comming from a rod or main bearing, white smoke is usually a sign of coolent being burned in a cylinder, blown head gasket or cracked head. Either way the engine must come out. If the crank or head is bad a rebuilt might be cheaper, be aware, some engine rebuilding companys will charge you if the core is not rebuildable. As someone who has done it both ways it has been my experience that I am money ahead to get a rebuilt with a warrenty than rebuild it myself. A boneyard engine is another option.
