    I'd go get the Consumer Reports car buyers guide, there's lots of info there. A lot depends on the needs - is this for commuting in town, driving with all their stuff across country, what? We ended up with a used Forester, based on safety and carrying capacity needs.

    Here's a site that rates cars according to a combined safety score, I found it useful:

    Good link - haven't been to that site for a couple of years. They have good car seat info too.
