If things are really that bad, any vehicle with AWD or 4wd (real/full time, not pickup truck style "select 4wd after you're already stuck) and snow tires will get you where you need to go. Even a Subaru or Audi Quattro sedan will do pretty well, but the additional ground clearance of a SUV or CUV help quite a bit, so something like a CRV/Rav4/Escape with AWD will do even better.
Today in Wisconsin we're expected to get a foot of snow. I have a Highlander with all season tires, and don't expect too much trouble getting home. I'm not sure what "terrible" means, but a foot of snow qualifies to most.
Oh, yes, ABS and stability/traction control are a must!
