Things will break and wear out as the car ages, but following the service interval in your owner's manual will help keep the car running safely. You can also find service information in the Edmunds Maintenance Guide linked below. Rubber parts - gaskets, motor mounts, exhaust hangers, etc. - don't age well over the years.
Shocks seem to last longer these days; visit a couple of shops and see what they recommend. Original equipment (OEM) shocks are designed for your specific vehicle and many people think they are a better choice for returning your car to the factory ride than an aftermarket, generic shock.
If you keep a detailed gas log, abrupt changes in your gas mileage can indicate problems as well.
