The overdrive is always on by default. If you press the "off" switch on the gear shift knob, it will drop out of overdrive (basically it will downshift) and the "OD off" light will illuminate---the OD light is located right about where your temperature gauge needle points during normal operation.
If your OD light does not illuminate when you hit the "off" button, you should have the car scanned to see if there is some transmission issue.
The best fuel saving is in overdrive..the default...you only switch it to "off" when you are towing, or perhaps climbing a long hill and you need more power in a lower gear.
