No, when I use chains on a 4x4, I put them on front right and rear left, but for selective awd
I put them on the rear tires.

The usual recommendation is to put tire chains on the drive axle. So front axle for FWD vehicles and rear axle for RWD vehicles. The Tire Rack and TireChains.com recommend that you chain up all four wheels on a 4WD or AWD vehicle.

Check your owner's manual too. For example, Honda says to only chain up the front tires on a 4WD Ridgeline (this may be more of a clearance issue, but Honda may be concerned about trashing the transmission).

If conditions are bad enough you'll want chains on all 4 wheels. Chains are cheap when compared to an accident, so buy 2 sets. The associated tensioners or tighteners may or may not be required......varies by application. Give them away with the car when you sell it.

It is not required to have tire chains, but you definitely might want to look into it. They are a serious convenience when trying to drive around there. It can get pretty dangerous.
