I think it's a good idea to have an independent mechanic look at any used car, certified or not.The dealers are supposed to give the CPO cars a "100 point" check, but checking the tire pressure in all the tires could make up 5 of those checks. What you are really buying is a car that fits the manufacturer's year and mileage requirements plus a manufacturer backed extented warranty of some sort (you have to be careful here to make sure the warranty is in fact backed by the manufacturer and not a third party). Who knows how carefully the mechanic looked over the car before it went on the lot? Ask to see the inspection sheets.Buying CPO doesn't guarantee that you won't wind up with a car with a lot of problems, and who needs to keep taking their car back to the service department even if the work is covered under warranty? An independent inspection may save you a lot of time and money. The Used Car Buying Checklist may give you some other things to think about when you buy that Corolla. There are some more tips in Certified Pre-Owned Gains Traction With Buyers.
