Is asking "Check My Wheel Torque" at a tire shop free service safety requirement check by D.O.T.?

I did my own tire rotate by hand and I didn't have long enough socket for my lug nuts to use my torque wrench. I noticed the wheels were kind of loose. I went to a local tire shop and asked them if they could check my wheel torque. They had a tech come to my car and adjust the torque. Then I asked him if he wanted money and he declined.

I hope this shop didn't think I bought my tires from them and came back to check my wheels?

I almost handled him a 5 dollar bill for lunch.

Most tire shops will do this type of thing free. Some will actually repair flats for free. They do not have to do so, it is just a courtesy and good business practice. Hard to believe in this age of having to pay to put air in your tired right? Whenever I go to my local tire shop for this type of thing I do tip the workers. It is usually some young kid who gets the job and they sure appreciate the money! Next time, give the guy the fiver, he will really appreciate it! Good luck!

The DOT does not require private businesses to check your lug nut torques for free. Buy a long socket or impact socket and a torque wrench and do it yourself. A mechanic checked the torque on what - 20 nuts, and you don't know that a $5 tip is the least you can do? Courtesy works both ways. Next time you need something, reward that shop, and if you get the same mechanic, tip him them (and no, you don't ask if someone wants a tip - you just hand it to him and say "Thank you") and explain that you neglected to do so when you should have.

It was also unsafe to everyone else on the road you shared when you drove with loose wheels. There are many instances of wheels flying off and killing an innocent person. Please don't do that again.
