    You put your finger on the problem. If the car is otherwise in good shape, a new engine will give you many more miles of happy motoring but it will still be an 8 year old car and the maintenance will become more expensive.Having said that, I would expect the Maxima to be pretty reliable for quite a few more years so I would be inclined to do as you are thinking and replace the engine.
