Is the fuel filter on the 2009 Hyundai Sonata that is to be replaced every 35,000 miles part of the fuel pump assembly?
I was reading your answer to someone who was going to replace their fuel pump because of the engine not running and you mentioned the fuel filter. I see that fuel filter is to be replaced every 35,000 miles. Is that where the fuel filter is under the rear seat with the fuel pump? It seems to be a very short interval if this is not a DIY item.

I have to say I'm stumped! I see it recommends the fuel filter replacement at 37.5K as you said, but as far as I know there is only one filter attached to the fuel pump and it is not a serviceable item. All I can suggest is to take it into the dealership and ask them how to replace the fuel filter and see what they say. I would love to hear back what their response is!

Who said it has to be replaced every 35K miles? The fuel filter on the Sonata is a permanent filter attached to the fuel pump. There is no indicated service interval. You just replace the pump if it goes bad.

Read it carefully. It says Replace OIL AN FILTER. That is your oil filter, not your fuel filter.

http://www.hyundai-forums.com/t22136-do-the-v6-sonata-have-a-fuel-filter.htmThe plot thickens. If you have to remove the fuel pump it most get pretty expensive every two years. There is an "air filter" for the fuel tank and a gas filter that is in the tank. Not the best design to make a "Maintenance Item" expensive to replace. I bet to keep the warrenty valid you need to do this maintence.

I just want to add some additional information. I went down the list of mileages for maintenance and it appears every 45,000 miles you should replace the oxygen sensor.I have never heard of preventive maintenance for a oxygen sensor. If you do not do these items yourself this inexpensive car is not as inexpensive. I wish Edmund's or Consumer Reports" would track the "cost to own" including dealer maintenance per the owners manual.Oxygen Sensor, Fuel Filter, Fuel Tank Air Filter. The fuel filter maybe a long term maintenance item but it normally has 1 clamp to the frame and two clamps for the fuel line a $25 plus filter job. Now it sounds like take the fuel pump out after removing the rear seat.http://www.hyundaiusa.com/owners/service/maintenance/maintenance_sonata.aspx

I wonder if your link to the Hyundai schedules hasn't been updated for 2009. I'd call the dealer or email Hyundai USA and ask for clarification. Please reply in here and let us know if you find out something.

I also am concerned and perplexed by the fuel filter issure. Tomorrow I will call the service department at the dealer and see if I can get an straight answer. Every parts store in Ohio says it is a non serviceable item, yet the manual calls for its replacement every 40,000 miles.
