Is it better to rebuild a damaged manual transmission or install a rebuilt one?

A follow-up to an earlier question. I have a 2000 Subaru outback. The dealer recommends rebuilding a damaged manual transmission for a cost of $3700 parts and labor. I asked about replacing the whole tranny with a factory rebuilt one. He quoted me a price of $2500 for the tranny and $1200 to install it. So, both options are the same price. Is one option better in terms of the long-term use of the car?

To note, a local transmission shop offered to rebuild the transmission for $2,000-2,500. Both places say they have mechanics with lots of experience rebuilding transmissions.

Any advice on which path to follow?

Thanks.

The dealer is going to be your most expensive option as they typically charge twice as much as a good independent mechanic. The trick is to find a good mechanic in your area who you can trust. I would go to Car Talk’s Mechanics Files site at

http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/find.html

Enter your zip code and you will get a list of mechanics in your area that other consumers have used and highly recommend. Look for ones that specialize either in the make of your car or the type of repair you need. Call 2-3 of them and ask for a ballpark figure on the repair. I have personally used this site with great success to find good honest mechanics and can highly recommend it. Good luck!

Wow ! $ 1200.00 to install a transmission ?

Or is that $ 1200.00 to remove and install a transmission ?

The dealer charges $ 100.00 an hour.

Does it really take 6 hours to remove a subaru tranny and 6 hours to install a subaru tranny ?

I guess,,,, " Thats The Beauty Of All Wheel Drive ".
