Is it true the '97 Nissan Maxima exhaust was redesigned? My mechanic says it will cost $2,000 to replace. Is this right?

Our 1997 Maxima SE needs an exhaust as, according to our mechanic, it is rotted and and cannot be repaired simply with new brackets. He advised against the job b/c the parts alone will be approximately $1600.00 b/c Nissan redesigned that exhaust and he will not be able to use any of the old parts. He is an extremely trust worthy mechanic, but I am hoping this piece of advice is somehow misinformed. If not, then is it worth replacing if the car has 169,000 miles? Do they really usually run for close to 200,000mi?

You can buy a complete performance exhaust system for your car for $350. Your mechanic may be trustworthy but he is dead wrong. Think about it: why would Nissan redesign an exhaust system for an 12 year old car? You can see the system at this site:

A mechanic should charge you about $200 to install it so in total the cost for the repair should be less that $600. Good luck!

I got your follow up question. Sorry to tell you that what your mechanic has told you is rubbish. Nissan has no recall or technical service bulletin on the 1997 Nissan Maxima exhaust system. You can go to the Edmunds.com maintenance section at http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/select.html and confirm this. Do yourself a favor and at least get a second opinion before you spend 2K bucks on an unecessary repair. I would go to Car Talk’s Mechanics Files site at

http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/find.html

Enter your zip code and you will get a list of mechanics in your area that other consumers have used and highly recommend. Look for ones that specialize either in the make of your car or the type of problem you have. I have personally used this site with great success to find good honest mechanics and can highly recommend it. Good luck!
