Is the car dealership trying to cheat me? HELP PLEASE!!

I really need some help here, please finish reading this and tell me if I am reasonable or not.

I brought this car last week, i negotiated with the salesperson and I mentioned that "I want to pay this much for this car and that will include everything I need to pay." OK, the salesperson agreed and they sell me the car for 28,000 dollars, which is the price I asked for and that should include everything, documents, taxes, destination and handling, all that, right?

Then, I went to register my car and get a tag. The lady works at the DMV told me that I haven't paid for the city sales tax, she show me the recipt of my car and under the city sales tax, it says "N/A" and I need to pay for it, the original price of the tag was $20 and now it goes up to $400 because of the tax. I decided not to pay at that time.

So then I asked some of my friends who brought cars from them, and they tell me that they never paid that much for a new tag. And the DMV lady told me that the car dealership usually collect all the taxes (city, county, state) when people buy a car.

Then I found on my county's website that says, "The dealer is required to collect sales tax due at their location." But, in my case, they didn't do it.

What do you guys think? Shouldn't the city sales tax be included in the $28,000 while county and state tax is already inclued? Now I am thinking they might try to let me pay that $400 so that they can make profit? Please tell me what do you guys think.

Call your local DMV Investigations office. Once you explain what happened the investigator will be able to tell you your state's rules and requirements. The dealership might be in violation of DMV regulations. You can probably use that against them to make them agree to pay the taxes. But first consult the DMV Investigations office and contact a local dealer fraud attorney. The attorney will not charge you since if you have a case they can make the dealership for their time. I'm guessing you're not in CA otherwise I'd say give me a call. Good Luck.

Don't get too bent out of shape yet. Talk to the dealership and with a little bit of patience is should be worked out. They may have just made a mistake.

And yes, taxes should have been included in that price unless you bought out of state. In that scenario, then you would be responsible to pay it. By the sound of it, you bought you car out of state and then registered in you home county. You would be responsible in this scenario.

Good luck and don't cry wolf too quickly.

I brought the car in the same state and county and city I live. My friends, who brought cars from them, live 5 miles away from me. Really don't know why this is happening to me but not to them.

Anyways, I am calling the dealership now and see what they have to say.

Then that's definitely an issue. I'm assuming this was just a mistake on the dealership's end. They should have included the tax and should take care of it.

If they don't, you can certainly raise a good enough stink.

Good luck!

The sleazy dealership should have paid the $400 fee. It is pretty sad what dealers will do to make a buck. Call the dealership, raise hell and contact everybdy you know about this problem. Contact the Better Business Bureau, the local television stations, newspapers, etc.

I've been screwed by quite a few dealerships and decided not to take it like sheep anymore. Good luck on your sleazy dealership issues.
