Is there a limit to the Documentary Fee New Jersey auto dealers can charge on a new car purchase?

Today I'm buying a a New 2009 Subaru Forrester in Ramsey, NJ. The dealer lists a $289 Documentary Fee on the contract. A dealer in NY was going to charge us a mere $45 for what appears to be the same Fee. Is there a limit to this 'fee?'

You should call your local DMV about this. State laws vary in restrictions and amounts.

We also have an excellent discussion going on about Documentation Fees and if you join, you might very well find someone from NJ who's been through this already.
