Is this a stupid question? Today I started my car and since I was having the idle air control valve problems before

Since I was having that problem before I decided to look under the hood and I got nosey and loosened the antifreeze cap and it spat up at me a bit!......should I expect this? Or am I just too paranoid?

I really don’t know that much about cars but I want to learn and I appreciate all your answers. Thanks....

Yes, I believe that's normal, since the temperature of the coolant liquid would be higher and hence it expands and has higher pressure (remember physics?).
BTW, please be careful. You shouldn't open the cap after you start the engine. If you do want to open it, wait until the engine cools off.

What you observed is the reason the radiator cap says 'do not open when hot'. When loosened the cap can eject forcefully with a plume of scalding hot water behind it and burn the person who opens it. Your lucky it just overflowed a bit.

Water spat.

It must not like what you did and tried to spat on you.
