It could be the solenoid/relay for the transfer case. It could also be the transfer case shift module. What was the specific code your mechanic got? Try a little trick to get it to reset. Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and then reconnect. If that works it is your soleniod/relay. You can also try resetting to 2 wheel drive when you first turn the truck on and driving in reverse for about 10 feet. In any event, I would change mechanics if your mechanic didn't know where the relay was. He should.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE RELAY,BUT IT SOUND'S LIKE THE ELECTRIC MOTOR ON THE TRANSFER CASE IS STUCK,A EASY FIX DISCONNECT BATTERY THEN JACK UP THE TRUCK,YOU SHOULD SEE THE SHIFT MOTOR ON THE BACK SIDE OF TRANSFER CASE,REMOVE BOLT'S AND SEE IF MOTOR IS FREE IF NOT YOU CAN FREE IT UP WITH WD40 AND PLIERS,THEN REPLACE IT ,WHILE IT IS OFF YOU CAN CHANGE IT TO 2 WHEEL HIGH.
    THIS IS COMMON ON EXPLORER'S.
