    I am not sure about your heater, but I used to have one of these cars, and had similar symptoms to what you describe and it was because of air leaking in from the rubber piece that connects the air box with the air filter going towards the throttle body. I forget what they call it but its called a mass airflow something (not mass airlfow sensor). A malfunctioning mass airflow sensor could also cause this problem and on this particular vehicle may not cause you to get a check engine light (though it should).

    I would check for a leak or crack in the rubber tube first.
