Likely it's your shift cable that goes from the steering column through the firewall, and down to the transmission. The cable on my motorhome's shifter got "lazy" too. It seems to be very common on automatic Fords with column shift that sit parked for a while at a time.

The cable is not the hardest thing to replace but involves some awkward moves. It's likely not too expensive.

I just bought a 2000 ranger. It wouldn't shift into park and start only in neutral and the shifter was loose. Since no park, the truck could roll. I put in a new cable but didsn't have to. Under the dash, where the shift cable connects to a arm (pushes in), the arm has 2 screws holding it and both screws were very loose, 1 almost out, and tightening them stopped the looseness. Underneath the car, where the cable connects to the transmission arm, about 10 inches up the cable also connects to a metal bracket and up about 6 inches from that is a a white-yellow clip that can be pushed up to lossen and adjust the cable length. Push the transmission arm all the way to the right (park) which extends the cable length that far,and push to clip back in to lock that length. When you shift, it should shift into park now and start. Youy may have to pry the cable end from the transmission arm before you push it to the right for park.
