    I do not believe it is a bad fuel gauge. I think the fuel pump overheats and malfunctions when not immersed in gasoline. Many Suburban owners report this exact problem. To check if the gauge is reading correctly, just before it reaches 1/4 tank take it immediately to the service station and fill it up , See if you can put in an amount equal to the 3/4's of a tank. If you constantly run your fuel down to nearly empty the pump overheats and this shortens its life span. You should avoid letting it fall below a quarter of a tank whenever possible.
