My Dodge Dakota cooling fan won't stop!

This evening after arriving home from work, I turned the car off as usual and removed the key, but after exiting the truck ( 2000 Dodge Dokota sport) , I still heard noise from under the hood so I opened it and noticed the electrical cooling fan was still On and working , so eventually I disconnected the battery to stop it from going dead. Tell Me Sir, What could be the trouble?

The fans on some vehicles keep running for awhile even after the engine is off. I don't know if this is the first time you've noticed or if your Dakota has this feature.
