My Hummer H2 gear shifter gets stuck in park. Any suggestions? Has anyone had this problem and how was it handled?

Usually the problem is the brake transmission safety switch is malfunctioning. This is the switch attached to the brake pedal that prevents starting the car unless your foot is on the brake. Most cars and trucks have an emergency release which is a hole near the shifter. You insert your key into this, shift into neutral and start the car. Then you do not put the shifter back into park until you get the car to the mechanic to fix the switch.
