On my `96 Mercury Grand Marquis, I turn my car off but my headlights stay on. How do I fix the problem?

I have been having problems with my `96 Grand Marquis since day one. Bought it used from a car dealer. I turn off my car but my headlights will not go off. How do we fix it?

Did you turn the headlight switch off??
Are you talking about daytime running lights? (i don't think this car has those, does it?)
Are you talking about automatic headlights? If so, do the lights go out after 5-10 minutes? Or do they stay on indefinitely?
