    Almost certainly a leak, as the refrigerant is not staying in the system. The dye is the correct way to trace the leak. In most cases it is just a leaking O-ring somewhere on the lines or hoses. This is fairly easy to fix. Your mechanic should be able to spot the leak easily with the dye.
