Maybe you have a limited slip differential otherwise known as (LSD) and those require an additive, otherwise you will get the clicking and gear clash noises..Try adding a tube of that, you can find some at any parts store... LSD additive... As for the proper oil weight Id go with what your owners manual recommends plus the additive..
I don't think a slightly heavier oil is going to mask actual differential damage. I agree with the other poster, that the problem was the fluid in the LSD. Maybe they did blow it, yeah, but if it's quiet now, apparently no harm done.
