What is the deal with car insurance and rental cars?

Not sure what you mean but you have options when renting. If your own auto insurance covers rental cars and you don't need extra protection, you can opt out. Some like the extra piece of mind. Read the fine print and/or talk to your insurance company if you aren't sure what is best for you.

All depends on your coverage, but they will typically cover a rental car for a period of time, depending on how long repairs take.

Read the find print in your contract.

I would also look at the credit card protection several card companies will automatically cover you for the deductible and such, which is the same as the additional insurance you would pay for through the rental car company. Some of the rental car companies can charge as much as 19.00 a day.
