Should I buy an '09 Honda Civic Si Sedan, '09 Accord Coupe EX or '10 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Base? Why? Why not?

The car will be new and in manual transmission. Can you rate in order of insurance cost? Please explain why I should or should not buy the specific car on my list. Also do you think insurance rates will be affordable if I buy a Cobalt SS Coupe or MazdaSpeed 3 compared to the others? I will be under my dad's insurance plan (52 yrs old, with 18 yrs insurance/driving experience) but I am 19 yrs old (1.5 yrs driving/insurance). I think it will come back down to the 3 listed, so please tell me which is the best to choose. Only thing I am concerned about is the Genesis being a first year production car.

The most reliable information on insurance costs for these cars can be obtained by phoning your insurance company and asking them the rates if you were to buy each of these particular vehicles. They should be happy to provide you with that information, since you and your family are already their clients. That way; the rates will be specific to your geographical area, your family's driving history, and your insurance company's rating system. Nobody here could give you such good information about insurance.

Regarding the choice of cars you listed; these cars are surprisingly similar in price and intended use. But I expect some of them will fit your personality, image, and style far better than others. Only you can determine the best actual fit, but I can mention some of the significant differences.

As someone who regularly answers questions on this site; coming from a lifelong career in the automotive industry, I will say that, despite the marketing hype, I expect the Hyundai will be significantly more prone to problems during its lifetime than either of the Hondas. I will also add that turbocharged engines have been substantially more vulnerable to wear, and correspondingly more demanding about oil quality and consistency of maintenance than non turbo engines. And when a turbocharger goes out (which they sometimes do) they are very expensive to repair or replace. It has also been my experience that a long warranty cannot make up for a basically troublesome vehicle. If it breaks; it will end up spending time in the shop, regardless of whether it is covered by warranty or not. And the ongoing frustration and loss of use of a problematic vehicle can quickly override whatever theoretical advantages it may have.

Regarding the two Hondas; one of them is a four door, and the other is a coupe. The Civic Si sedan is basically an economy sedan with some sporty styling touches. The Accord Coupe is a fastback coupe; which is inherently sleek and sporty without needing any cosmetic enhancements. The Accord also has more torque than the Civic, while getting better gas mileage at the same time. When I was your age, we used to think of four door cars as "daddy's wheels." Since you are intending to get a manual transmission; my question is "why get a four door car?"

I would think that the Cobalt SS and Mazdaspeed 3 are not race oriented enough to warrant a significantly higher insurance premium; but I am not as knowledgable as your insurance agent about that issue.

And, if you don't mind an additional possibility; I'd suggest also considering the Scion Tc coupe. The base model Scion Tc is thousands of dollars less than the Hondas. And they're even coming out with a special TRD edition this year; which looks very cool. Plus Toyota quality (Toyota makes the Scion) cannot be beaten. Even with the add on package; this car is still comparable to the Hondas in price. http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopi...

I also want to mention that only the Accord and the Scion are designed to run on regular gas. The link below is a detailed comparison of these four vehicles.

I hope you find this information useful.

The new Genesis is quite a bit different from the others with rear wheel drive which I prefer. I wouldn't worry about the new car issue as it has a long warranty and Hyundai was very careful to spend a lot of development time on it. The Honda is also different from the others as it is a high revving normally aspirated engine. It needs to be wound out to squeeze the power out of it which is at the top of the rev band. The Cobalt is the top performer but it will depreciate the most and has serious quality issues. The Mazdaspeed is probably the best all around combo of the front drivers as it has great reviews, sharp handling and good reliability but the styling is controversial. So, I think it comes down to which one you like the most after seeing it in person and most importantly driving it. As to insurance, you can call the insurance company and ask for quotes to see what the difference in annual premiums will be. Being 19 and the cars listed all being performance versions, expect that it will not be cheap!. Good luck on whatever you decide!
