Because you don't state the year of the vehicle it's hard to establish a baseline or worth of the vehicle. Let's say it's a 2002 in average condition with 153K miles. The vehicle is worth about $11K minus $2.5K for the mileage and minus $3K for the condition making it worth about $5.5K. The trans replacement on a rebuilt with labor will run at least $2.5K. In my opinion at 153K miles the trans may be the first of many issues that come up. I'd seriously consider trading it before I'd replace the trans.

Is it a manual or automatic? I will assume it's an automatic, if the car is in acceptable condition otherwise I would consider having it repaired or maybe even consider a used transmission but when buying a used automatic transmission consideration as to $$$ saved compared to rebuilt and what kind of warranty the used transmission has so buyer beware on used parts, they can be a great deal but use caution and get warranty in writing. As far as the cost that won't be known until its been inspected.I would call several repair shops for "ball park quotes" to see if its feasible to have repaired also keep in mind that if repairs will cost more than 30-40% of your cars value I would look for another car and sell this one as is.A manual transmission will be much less to repair .I hope this helps some

The Lexus RX 300 with 153,000 miles is a 2001, and only serviced by Lexus.

I am amazed the Lexus still runs at all. All the RX are prone to serious transmission problems. These cost $5,500 to repair, and even more for the 4X4 versions. You should dump the car and avoid the RX models. I have 2 RX300 2001 models and they have been expensive nightmares with the tranmission. Lexus nor Toyota will help you, even if you have the expensive extended warranty as I found out first hand.

I guess it really depends the condition of the vehicle over all and just because its a lexus don't mean its worth repairing either. Also how old is the vehicle and whats your finacial situation. If you have the money I would buy another vehicle but if you don't then I guess it would be better to fix it. If your someone who makes decent money I would definetly check out the new 09 Buick Enclave CXL. It's a marvelous vehicle and it and Jaguar took first place for being the most reliable  vehicle on the road even over Lexus. Make sure you get a saleman with a lot of product knowledge because this vehicle has a lot to offer. Good Luck
