If there is only one really loud click, when the key is first turned to the start position, it indicates that there is something blocking the starter, or locking up the engine; which prevents the engine from turning. To confirm this, turn on the headlights, and watch their brightness while trying to start the car. If the engine is jammed, the lights will get dimmer when you hear the loud click, and they will STAY DIM for as long as the key is held in the start position. If the lights get bright again, before the key is released, then the solenoid is not working properly. But if the lights go completely out, or get so dim that they are almost gone; then the battery is probably bad. The next paragraph deals with that problem.

If there is a rapid series of really loud clicks when you turn the key; this means that the battery is unable to supply enough power to keep the solenoid engaged. This could come from a defective battery, loose or corroded connections at the battery terminals, or from a battery that has been discharged by too many attempts to start the motor. In that case, you'll need to clean and tighten the cable clamps, and if that doesn't help; then recharge the battery with a battery charger. If it still does the same thing after that; have the battery tested with a load tester. It is important to use a load tester, rather than just a hydrometer or a voltmeter, because only the load tester will show how much work the battery actually can do. It the battery has become too weak, it will have to be replaced.

I hope this helps!!!

Joel makes excellent points. First, recharge the battery. If the clicking continues, remove the solenoid and have it tested as it may have been a defective new part ( happens all the time). If the solenoid is OK, pull a plug and make sure there is no excess gas in the cylinder jamming the engine, as this can happen when you tried multiple times to start the car. Lastly, check the starter as this is all that is left to go wrong. Good luck and let us know any follow up questions!
