Starting Chevy Malibu with foot on the brakes?

I have a 2005 Malibu and on two occasions I have had what I thought was a dead battery. We were listening to the CD player prior to starting the car, in the acc. mode of the ignition. Then when we tried to start the car it wouldn't even turn over. Yesterday a gentlemen told me to put my foot on the brakes and then try to start it. IT STARTED!! So it wasn't a dead battery. Is anyone familiar with this new safety/security feature? I'm guessing that if you do anything with the ignition, other than start it, you then have to have your foot on the brake??

Sounds like the Brake-Transaxle-Shift-Interlock (BTSI) is coming into play. Its not that new a feature (although you may not have encountered it before). The basic idea of it it to not allow vehicle to be started when in gear.
