Test drove many over days at CarMax. Found out the salesguy only gets $150! commision only. I felt ill, what's up?

I love Carmax and shopping for cars there but that is so sad I don't know how they keep staff there. What is Edmunds feelings about Carmax in the Auto world and working there and getting a car there?

I don't work at a Carmax but I am too a good customer. I read somewhere they get $75.00 for presenting a vehicle to a costumer and additional &75.00 for a sale. But I also heard they are on hourly rate too but of course it's not much. I have personal sales consultant that I will only deal with. She's been with Carmax for almost 10 years and I remember hearing her telling me about other women employees in service department are jealous of her because they think she makes $50k. And of course she doesn't. She does a fantastic job with her deals and I felt little down about it too.

I wonder if that $150.00 becomes more if S.C.s get on Director's & President's Club Or if they get special one time $500.00-$1,500 bonus.

I know they get commission on any accessory request like Lojack, remote starters. Cause I bought a brand new Scion tC through them and I ordered about 2,900-ish of accessories so I bet she probably made least $250.00's off of that alone. No wonder why she gave me "thank you" hug at the end. lol

Well I became good buddies with my sales guy. It is commision only and there is no hourly at all. You make a point about bonuses but thats in all whole year you get maybe 1500 if youre luck. My new buddie doesnt work at CarMax anymore.

I still dont know why anyone would work in that Auto environment.

Based on the feedback I've received from others in the auto industry, there is very high turnover at these stores. You are basically relegated to being an ordertaker.

Poor pay and lots of salesmen and vehicles. Not the best environment to make a buck. =(

No wonder why Carmax gives demos to sales consultants. To make up poor pay. Some of them get to drive Acura’s and the occasion 350Z. I always wonder if inventory manager tells them what to take or if the S.C. gets to pick?

Anyway, I know some days you'll get messed with and some other days can go quite well. But for some strange reason; I am crazy and competitive to try at Carmax for sales. I can relate with anyone (being from low income & diverse town; probably helped) and I talk about anything. Cars, sports, cooking, local & nation news, animals and even history. I maybe 24 but I enjoy talking about odd facts that happened in history. Social Sciences/Studies were always my strongest subject in school.

To have a DEMO at CarMax you have to sell 750 cars, that may be tricky if the average employment term of a CarMax salesperson is only 5 months.

Perhaps the question I posted is retorical and that CarMax is for some a fun place to shop but a crappy place to be a Salesman.

Where the CarMax Corporate Geeks really screwed their own employees in the long run is they toss out HUGE recruiting bonuses if you refer a guy to be a Salesperson. Probably because that guy you recruited now thinks youre an a'hole and the recruiting bonus has to spent on a home security system. Lol...serious.

Do you know how much of a bonus? I'm just wondering. Cause at my current employer. We have same program if we recommend anyone for employment we receieve $250.00; pays out in six months. While the person will get a sign-on bonus was $1,000 for me but I think its up to $1,700. Taxed the hell out of it. I used mine to buy my current car. The company used to give them out on your first pay day until many employees took the money and quit.

It's just I like hearing all of this dirt. No one wonder why so many blue and yellow birdies are nice to me when I'm wearing my work clothes when I'm getting service. If any of them I know that came to my company's job fair and I saw them there. I would personally take them to my big boss who does all the hiring. I'm not going to take any Carmax employee to my boss...it's gotta be someone I know already. Not going to put my a*s on the line for anyone.

Car sales can be a tough business.

You can always give your salesperson a thank you in the form of cash, a gift card, or drop off a pizza now and then. And tell your friends about him or her.

^^^
Day after my second buy; I forgot I had left my third key at the house. So I went back to Carmax with the key and "Thank You" card. My S.C. happened to be waiting for a next customer as I walked in. Gave her the key, and the card. I gave her few good pictures of the car that I took while it was fresh from the car wash in front of Lake Michigan. She got flattered and even hang up two pictures & the card in the showroom with the rest of great surveys from other costumers. She knows I brag about her great "Stress free" sales with me online. When we usually run into each other in the store; we'll do small talk like "Hey; what's up?"

Yesterday, I was there getting service. I waited in the showroom for four hours. I saw these costumers waiting with me. I thought these people were getting service; turns out they were waiting for business office to finish paperwork and take delivery. None of their S.C.s weren't with them (when my S.C. stood at my side through out the whole time while chatting to me about her family while I added my personal inputs. She never tried selling me anything else. Then she sat through 15 minutes of me signing loan papers.) When I did see a S.C. with a costumer...he was giving them sales tricks like lying about things I already knew that weren't true. Then told them to walk to the business office and walked away.

I guess my S.C. is a old school Carmax sales consultant. lol

My friend is a Toyota used car salesman. He told me he gets $100.00 for each car up to 4 cars, then on the 5th sale he gets $500.00 then it drops down to $100.00 a car until the 10th car is sold. He then gets $1000.00. This is during the monthly quota system Toyota has set up. But he also get's a commission for Dealer add on options per sale. And this is at a Toyota Dealership.
