Well it is not rocket science and it sounds harder than it is. Basically, you get a diagram of the electrical system first so you know where to run your trace. In your case the ignition circuit going to the coil. You need a little gadget called a short circuit finder which consists of a 10 amp circuit breaker that plugs into the fuse holder that is shorting and a compass. Most auto stores sell these or you can make your own with a circuit breaker and some 18 guage wires with alligator clips or spade connectors attached to the ends. Basically you remove the fuse and plug the unit into the fuse box and then you follow the diagram wires with the compass. This works on magnetism as a powered wire is magnetic. as you pass the magnet over the wiring harness, the finder will switch on and off ( the store bought one has a buzzer to make life easier) and the magnet needle will be deflected. Eventually, you get to a section of the wiring where the short is and the needle will not be drawn to the wire and will not deflect when the curcuit opens. There is your short. Next you open the harness find the broken or melted wire and repair it.
