The steering wheel of my 1999 Dodge Caravan is suddenly almost impossible to turn. What could it be?

My 1999 Dodge Caravan is suddenly impossible to steer. I parked alongside a curb, the wheels did rub a bit-but nothing drastic. An hour or so later, I went to drive home and it takes all of my strength to turn the wheel. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Steering column maybe? Is this a hugely expensive fix?
Thanks for any advice- McChatty

I suspect your power steering pump has died. It has nothing to do with bumping the wheels on the curb.

That sounds like a big repair. Is it?
thanks
