The tailgate open warning light comes on on my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee even if I slam the door hard. Why is this?

The warning light comes and stays on the dash when ignition is switched on. This may have contributed to a flat battery overnight. Cheers

That lamp would take days to kill the battery. The tailgate switch is probably sticking. Depress it a few times to see if you can loosen it up. If still having the problem then replace the switch.
