Many times a bulb will be bad, when it still looks good. The bulbs should all be chacked for continuity in BOTH beams with an ohmmeter. If you can't test them, just get new bulbs. Similarly, fuses will sometimes look good, but will not carry electricity. Try substituting another fuse of the same rating in the fusebox position for the rear lights. Sometimes the ground wire that runs from the light socket to a bolt in the body gets broken or has a corroded connection. And sometimes there is a problem with a connector in the wiring harness.

Did you say the red brake light is on in the dash?

This is a separate problem that should be looked at too. The red light means the fluid is low or the system is not working right or the parking brake is on.

What kind of car is it and year.?

My 1991 camry, the rear lights are not operating and the brakes lights dont seem to work. The lights i am talking about are the ones in the dash that warn door open or brake on. the light that is showing is the picture of a car and the back lights are shining like either they are on or broken, dont know which it doesnt say in my manual.

OK the rear lights not working indicator is on.

I'll have to check my wiring on mine, its just like yours. I remember a electronics box in the trunk under the insulation on the left fender I believe. It goes bad. A resistor or something malfunctions and screws up the lights.

I think that's what wrong with yours. I'll check mine in the daylight to see if it is there,

We've had the EXACT same thing hapen to us! Tenison, etc. Pull away the molded carpet on the driver's side inside your trunk, and you'll see a bright yellow box called the brake lamp failure sensor--Dimensions are 3"x3"x1" Note: Paid $15 for this in a wrecking yard! Don't let the mechanics rip you off! Toyota almost wanted to charge $175 just for the part, and who knows how much more for labor!
