Toyota Tercel On/Off thermal fan switch.

I didn't know about that other switch. Is that the one that is right next to the other one on the housing?

Possibly. You know it's a 20 year old car and I just didn't remember the set up on them.

I've looked up some testing instructions for you on how to test the thermal switch. Maybe this will help you.

  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator. Unscrew and remove the temperature switch from the water outlet housing.
  2. Place the switch in a pan of cool, (below 118°F), water and
check continuity with an ohmmeter. There should be continuity between
the terminal and switch housing. Fig. 17
  3. Heat the water to above 140°F and check that there is NO continuity.
  4. If not as specified, replace the temperature switch.
  5. Apply a suitable sealant to the switch threads and reinstall.
  6. Refill the radiator with coolant.

If the switch checks out, then

INSPECT ENGINE MAIN RELAY
NOTE: Located in the engine compartment relay box. It's a little square thing, second one from the left.

nspect Relay Continuity

(a) Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 3.
(b) Check that there is continuity between terminals 2 and 4.
(c) Check that there is no continuity between terminals 4 and 5.

  • If continuity is not as specified, replace the relay.
