I can recommend the BMW X3 and Mercedes ML350 (as long as you get an '06 or newer, they changed the body style and the old ones aren't very nice). Not saying the Audi/VW's aren't good, but I haven't had much time in them. The X3 is nice in the city because it drives like a 3 series but you sit up high like an SUV. If that's too small, the 3.0si X5 is another great choice. If you don't want something quite so heavy you could always look at a Volvo XC90.

Go lease a Subaru Forester. A 3yr lease will run less then $10,000, and you'll have a new vehicle with a warranty to boot. Might be a little small though.

A base model Kia Sedona can be had brand new for under $20,000 since there are $4000+ in rebates available. More space than a SUV, but bad depreciation. Still, this is my recommendation.

If you must have an SUV, look for a used Toyota Highlander. Rides nice and gets decent mpg. CarFax everything.
