Will the car only be used to transport yourself or do you have other needs in a vehicle? People often buy something that is reliable but then find that their requirements should have pointed them in another direction. Keep in mind that coupes will be more expensive to insure than 4 door sedans. Of course, the cheapest thing for a student to insure would be a minivan - but I won't go there.
A 2004 Mazda 3 for that price is possible with tough negotiation. A 2004 Pontiac Vibe would be a little bit cheaper and a 2004 Subaru Impreza might be possible. A Toyota Celica 2001-02 would work. Find one that has had its 60K service (90K for the Celica) and all maintenance records and have it checked out by your mechanic before you begin to negotiate.
