What causes the shifter indicator not to register that it is not in park?

when i put the car in park every position is highlighted instead of just park. the info center says that the car needs to be in the park position.

In Vehicle Type > Minivan / Van
In Maintenance & Repair > Transmission

it sounds like the shifter linkage is out of adjustment.

Thats all i can say since i have no idea what kind of car you are talking about.
