    Two totally different parts.
The Coil is part of the iginition system which provides spark to the distributor and then to the spark plugs.
The starter solenoid is part of the starting system. It is what activates the starter to engage the flywheel and turn the engine over.
More than likely the problem was with the coil. If the iginition system gets wet it will cause your problems.
The starter solenoid when operating properly is only in operation when starting the engine and after started it is passive.
I believe your mechanic is correct. Do you still experience the same problems?

I just tried to post pictures of the coil and solenoid but couldn't get it to post.
So, just to give you a basic idea what to look for:
COIL- is hooked into the ignition system, when you have a distributor it is usually the
"sparkplug cable" in the middle of the cap, at the end of that cable is the coil
Solenoid- Usually mounted directly on the starter top, follow your positive cable (usually red) from the battery to the relay then down to the starter and you will find it.

If I can get these photos to upload you'll see better. Sorry
