Have you ever had the tranny fluid drained/refilled? What color is the current fluid (is it burnt smelling?) and is it at the proper level? I don't think you'll resolve things with a fresh tranny drain/fill (though you never know), but it may help identify if any metal shavings are collecting in the pan. Might need a tranny specialist take a look.-Brian
I did have the transmission fluid drained, and there was no burnt smell nor discoloration. If I turn overdrive off, the problem stops. That leads me to believe it is something specific to the overdrive, but I don't know what.
I have the exact same problem in my 03 Ford Escape (82,000 miles). It's driving me crazy shifting hard between 3rd and 4th.
